Idealist

He believes in everything.

He believes in everything;

That time had given him cause.

He might not know it now or then,

But here's to trying again -

To find the way-

To all the possibilities in the thoroughfare.

Two ways for him to see the morning afterglow

Beyond the horizon.

'Cause I'm idealistic in my views.

Well, I've searched the cosmos for the truth.

One hundred thousand miles beyond the sky.

He believes in what's before him.

It's a silver lining shadow umbra.

What is life?

What is hate?

What is fear and what is fate?

I'm an idealist just reaching for-

A new beginning.

And it won't matter if I am right-

Or wrong.

See I've been living day to day.

And along the way I learned-

There's a little bit more to the truth.

But if this were.

If this were an idealistic world.

Then love would be free.

Cheers to happiness.

Cheers to pain.

Cheers to the new year.

Cheers to sunshine.

And the rain.

Cheers to the new year.

He believes in everything.

He believes in everything;

That life had given him purpose.

I've searched the cosmos for the truth.

One hundred thousand miles beyond the sky.

'Cause I'm Idealistic in my views.

He believes in what's before him.

It's a silver lining shadow umbra.

What is life.

What is hate.

What is hurt and what is fate.

I'm an idealist just reaching for a new beginning.

And it won't matter if I am right or wrong.

See I've been living day to day,

And along the way, I've learned-

There's a little bit more to the truth.

But if this were.

If this were an idealistic world.

Then love would be free.

Cheers to happiness.

Cheers to pain.

Cheers to the new year.

Cheers to sunshine.

And the rain.

Cheers tot he new year.

But if this were...

If this were an idealistic world,

Then love would be free.

Every so often, we make a compilation video of memories we've had together, and there's always a nostalgic ballad attached to it. "Idealist" is the second; the first being "Anywhere Without You". Furthermore, "Idealist" is actually our section video with lyrics; the first of which being "Mangroves". But I digress.

My personal concept for "Idealist" is that the main character in this song has a lot of idealistic beliefs/goals and self-evaluates throughout the process, but at the same time, he's doing all this thinking while being an astronaut. And from his view of the vastness of the universe, he has a moment of relief that maybe what he thinks is idealistic might just be enough. Of course, the irony of it all is that he achieved the feet of reaching beyond the heavens; something that is an idealistic, unreachable dream to most people. Yet, he thinks nothing of it as it is just who he is.

This song is entirely about me, which is rare. I'm the astronaut. lol And every now and again, I am reminded that I have achieved a great deal more than a lot of the people I grew up with, yet I never look at my life in this way. I am always looking forward; always believing in myself and the people around me. However, I do feel bogged down by so many pessimistic views of what I want to achieve. Notice how I didn't say "negative". No, pessimistic.

I am a weird type of pessimist that is extremely optimistic for the future but fully prepared to experience the darker side of things like failure and disappointment. It's a mechanism. lol I guess one could say I expect the worst but believe in the best.

Belief.

A bit sideways from that other word "passion" but in the same neighborhood...

Another funny thing about this song is that it was written almost two years (or exactly?) before - well, the original version, that is. And it really was not that much of a positive, upbeat song. It was very different. The melody and some of the lyrics in the first verse and pre-chorus remained, but you guys...lol

This song had like 11 sections to it, originally, with no chorus. lol And it was dark as hell.

It got shelved during our songwriting hiatus.

We won't write any new music or perform live shows until we find and finalize our final member, the bassist, with the exception of special events like holidays and acoustic sets.

Mike V. was being all complain-y this fall, and he pointed out that we didn't have a New Year's song. I wasn't all that game because I honestly didn't know how to write a song that "sounded" like New Year's. I mean, what is a new year's song? Auld lang syne? Yeah, that's all I got.

What do you think? Did we do this right?
