Two EPs and a single in, and the band is going strong. We are a bass-less, alt. rock trio of NYC; a culturally aware brotherhood from the US, Japan and The Bahamas with colorfully influenced artistic backgrounds citing everything from graphic novels to clavichord suites since 2016. We are rock-based multi-genre and dynamic music, while sharing a common vision for success, here to tell you about our similarities, to question unspoken truth and to show the industry that having an open mind can result in unexpected discoveries, especially when there’s food and anything sugary around.
Intriguing. Dynamic. Unexpected. Bass-less alt. rock with impressionistic structure, an In-Your-Face philosophy and dramatic - often cinematic - themes by three multinational eccentrics, spanning loud anthems to bluesy tracks; sometimes danceable, always provocative.
“Nihil Admirari” is a Latin phrase generally defined by Wikipedia after a lazy millennial google search as “To be surprised by nothing”; a way of life that suggests not to have a mind so closed as to prejudge, predict or cast aside anything as impossible. Noshi is a Caribbean national with a bizarrely calm (stoic) and polite demeanor who grew up mimicking his favorite crossdressing Japanese metal bands while living a double life as a classical musician in a jazz school. Vabo most likely has an unrecognized gummy bear addiction completely overshadowed by his adoration of 90s and even earlier American and British punk scenes matched only by an unreasonably large and random knowledge of world musicians. Mike V. loves anything potato based. Okay, more than that, he’s a quiet and shy metalhead who never stops studying jazz and theater, for some reason, thus making him both the weirdest and the most normal bandmate so far. The music we make can be contrarian to so many degrees that it then makes you gawk while you go partially deaf because you didn’t listen to the earplug announcement at the start.
“We’ve been together for two years now - well, Vabo and I first formed the band as an acoustic rock duet. We had found each other on Craigslist after way too many failed attempts at finding new people to play with in New York. We both had that defeatist mindset not to expect anything, but Vabo’s optimism and my stubbornness to find a match ultimately lead us to auditioning for each other in the rain on a hill somewhere in Washington Heights. It also helped that we were both a bit weird and not quite...adulting? We didn’t go out partying, didn’t smoke, didn’t have drivers licenses, no stints with the law… We were really just artsy quirky guys with simple personalities and complex goals. Then, just the same, we found Mike V. a year later with this exact ad. Though, he had only been looking for one week because of course.
We’re constantly being judged. I’m this pseudo-feminine black guy with two Asian dudes saying we’re in a rock band. People walk out before Mike even clicks his sticks. Yet one bar in, and we’ve got you. We work really hard on what we do and to convey our message. Everything has a meaning and a reason from how I move my hands to why a political tune has a “pirate section”. Just give us a try. I promise we’ve got something you’d like.” - Noshi
